How can I avoid Self Assessment Tax Return Late Filing Penalties ?

From 2011 HMRC have severely increased their penalty system for late filed personal and partnership Tax returns. These will now start at £100 and rise to £1,600 plus tax related penalties and are not linked to whether the tax liability has been paid by the due date. Indeed they will be charged if there is no liability but the tax Return is filed on line after 31st January following the tax year.

The only way to avoid these penalties being charged is to file a paper Tax Return before 1st November or online by 31st January.
